Beskrivning
The mimidarai of typical rounded form rising from a flared foot, set with two horizontal handles to the side, painted with scrolling floral tendrils and peonies on a flat black ground. Period: Meiji period (1868-1912). Diameter c. 37 cm.

Wilfrid Fleisher (1897‑1976), thence by descent in the family.
Note:
Mimidarai is a part of the set of utensils used for teeth blackening (ohaguro), a traditional beauty routine popular in Japan since Kofun period (300-538 AD) Amongst other luxury lacquer items they were traditionally included in the bridal trousseaus of wealthy daughters of aristocrats or nobles. It was common for young women to begin blackening their teeth after marriage. This manner also prevented tooth decay.
