Oil on canvas, 92.5 x 126 cm, including frame 118 x 153 cm.
The French painter Henri Valton, active in the 19th century and known for his depictions of regional life and costume, is the author of a painting entitled A Peddler Selling Shawls to Women in the Troyes Region, now in the Musée de Vauluisant, Troyes, inv. no. INV. 61.2.
As in the present painting, the female figures wear the toquat, the traditional headdress associated with Sundays and festive occasions. The setting likewise corresponds, with the Church of Saint-Sulpice at left and the château built under Louis XIII, both still extant.
