Contemporay full calf bindings, partly worn, inner hinges split and upper board partly loose in vol I. Some slight staining, 1 tear to one leaf in vol. I.
Bookplate with latin phrase "Nil in villa Minerva".
Newton's Principia, 'the greatest work in the history of science' (PMM, Printing and the Mind of Man).
This is the second 'Jesuit' edition, first published in 1739-42, much valued for its extensive commentary and textual apparatus. It is based on the third edition from 1726 and edited by fathers Thomas Le Seur (1703–1770) and François Jacquier (1711–1788), both French priests/scholars.
The first edtion of Newton's Principia was published in 1682 in London, two other editions (1713 and 1726) were published in Newton's lifetime.
