4to (263x210 mm.). viii, 319, #7; #2, 246, #2 pp. Illustrated with mezzotint frontispiece to vol. 1, aquatint frontispiece to vol. 2, 17 engraved plates (complete with 9 to vol. 1 and 6 in vol. 2; some browning, vol. 2 with some dampstaining; text in vol. 2 incl. title and frontispiece with dampstains).
Contemporary full calf, worn, upper boards loose, spines with damages. Signature of G. Armfelt on first free endpapers. Bookplate of Carl Fischerström.
First Edition. Text includes an English translation of Xenophon's work on horsemanship and Thomas Pownall's Dissertation on the Ancient Chariot.
Provenance: Per Philip Jacob Waloddi Fischerström 1828-1892, married to Ida Aminoff. Crown Equerry, colonel, hippologist, courtier, manager of Strömsholm's stud farm and first manager of Strömsholm Riding School. Fischerström participated in the occupation corps in Schleswig 1849-50 and attended the Spanish Riding School in Vienna 1862-63. As the first director of the riding school, Fischerström had a great influence on the riding skills within the Swedish army.
