MARTIN LE JEUNE - L'ARMESSIN - SIMONNEAU. Hand-coloured engraved battle plate of the Battle of Lesnaya (Lesna), [Izobrazhenie batlii ... Sentiabria 28 1708 (Image of the Batttle ... near the village of Lesnaya ... September 28 1708).] c. 515x708 mm., whole leaf c. 557x748 mm., frame c. 650x845 mm.
With Russian text beneath the image. Tsar Peter the Great is shown on horse to the centre in the engraving. Without signatures of the artists. Trimmed to platemark with new margins, engraving slightly buckled. A handwritten note in French verso of engraving: Colorier par Joseph Bennosconi (?). Some spotting to the glass. Framed in old frame, old glass.
According to note on the cardboard verso, this engraving was bought by Frederik Prytz (born 1878) in Russia and brought home to Norway in 1918.
Russian painter Pierre-Denis Martin le Jeune (1663-1742), French engravers Charles Simonneau (1645-1728) and Nikolas Martin de L'Armessin (1640-1725).
Compare Snoilsky, Svenska historiska planscher (1893), pp. 208, 216.
From the collection of four plates of The Great Northern War between Russia and Sweden (1700-21) . Those were: the battle of Lesnaya 1708, Poltava 1709 (2) and Hangö 1714.
At the Battle of Lesnaya the Russians defeated a Swedish force under General Lewenhaupt. The confidence of this victory contributed to the more significant victory in the Battle of Poltava, which effectively ended Sweden´s role as a great power in Europe.
