Folio (350x253 mm.). 60 hand-coloured aquatinta engravings, engraved by Scott or Vivares after Francois Balthazar Solvyns (complete, last plate with some foxing, otherwise only slight foxing, lacking textleaf to plate 39).
Contemporary red half calf, partly worn and rubbed, split inner hinges, gilt spine, damages to upper part. Bookplate of Thomas Philip Earl de Grey Wrest Park.

The Belgian marine painter Frans Baltazar Solvyns lived in Calcutta between 1791 and 1803 and is considered - along with Thomas Daniell - one of the earliest engravers in India. During his stay, he dedicated himself to comprehensive documentation of Indian culture and way of life in the late 18th century. His works show people in their everyday lives, their professions, festivals and religious customs, many with instruments.
