COVENS, JEAN - MORTIER, CORNEILLE. De Haven en Straat van Gibraltar, Niewlyks Getekend, en in't Licht Gebracht. Amsterdam c. 1730.
Hand-coloured engraved map with fine cartouche and three insets, c. 510x600 mm. Centrefold as issued, some minor spotting, mostly to margins, small repair to lower margin.
Fine chart which shows the bay and port of Gibraltar. with the 1704 siege, as Gibraltar was surrounded by Anglo-Dutch ships. The three insets show Gibraltar in relation to the Straits of Gibraltar, a panoramic view of Gibraltar and its citadel, and a bird's-eye plan of the fortifications of Gibraltar.
The Spanish attacked and instituted a lengthy siege on Gibraltar, but were unsuccessful and suffered a huge defeat, losing 5000 men while the British lost only 300.
