SPARRMAN, ANDERS. Voyage au Cap de Bonne-Esperance et Autour du Monde avec le Capitaine Cook et principalement dans le pays des Hottentots et des Caffres. Paris, Buisson, 1787.
8vo. (200x130 mm. binding). 1 folding engraved map, 16 partly folding engraved plates (all, 1 plate with some stains to upper part, some minor spotting and browning). Modern speckled paper bindings, black title labels (Knut Hässler, Stockholm). Half-title to vol 1 with browning to margins, text partly with some minor dampstains to margins, some browning.
Published simultaneously in two volumes, this is the first French translation of Sparrman’s landmark travel account. It is widely regarded as the most accurate 18th-century description of the Cape Colony's people and culture.
Provenance: Birger Strandell (1901-1993), Swedish physician and famous Linnaeus collector, then inherited within the family. Strandell was one of the foremost Linnaeus collectors and chairman of the Swedish Linnaeus Society for many years.
He was a descendant of Linnaeus and his collection, which was founded by Emil Lindell, is one of the largest collections regarding Linnaeus ever to be in private hands. It now belongs to the Hunt Botanical Library i Pittsburgh, USA.
