IDES, EVERT YSBRANTS. (Eberhart Isbrand): Dreyjährige Reise nach China, von Moscau ab zu lande durch groß Ustiga, Siriania, Permia, Sibirien, Daour und die große Tartarey. Nebst einer landcharte und vielen Kupfferstichen, so von dem abgesandten selbst auff der reise auffgezeichnet worden; wie auch einer beschreibung von China durch einen Chineser in seiner Sprache geschrieben. Alles aus dem Holländischen übersetzet. Frankfurt: Fritsch 1707.

Early 20th century light brown half calf, faded richly gilt spine in five compartments. (Hedberg). Some minor foxing. A few old marginal annotations or underlinings in text. Long old notes in Swedish on last endpapers (5 pages). Signature of Nils Rosén von Rosenstein 1781 and Selma Ek 1886 on back of frontispiece, bookplate of Birger Strandell and his notes on inside of upper board.

The object of this embassy of 1692-95 led by Ides, a merchant in Russian service, was to conduct further commercial agreements with the Chinese, which it did not, in fact, achieve. (Löwendahl)
The decription of China, (pp257ff.) was by a Chinese doctor, Dionysius Kao, who practised in Sian and India, and was a Roman Catholic convert.
Provenance: Birger Strandell (1901-1993), Swedish physician and famous Linnaeus collector; inherited within the family. Strandell was one of the foremost Linnaeus collectors and chairman of the Swedish Linnaeus Society for many years. He was a descendant of Linnaeus and his collection, which was founded by Emil Lindell, is one of the largest collections regarding Linnaeus ever to be in private hands. It now belongs to the Hunt Botanical Library i Pittsburgh, USA.
