Large 12:o (binding about 175x110 mm., text 167x95 mm.). (3), 4-299, (1 blank) pp.
Near contemporary brown half calf, defective, tape mended in the joints and hinges. Pp. 197/98 with small paper damage in outer margin. Some minor foxing. Old library stamps (also cancellation stamps) on last page and p. 97 and 193 (Taylor Institution, Oxford). Bookplate of John Atkinson, Newbiggen.
Second (corrected London edition of Candide in French, with the same date on the title-page as thr original edition. The two London editions are the only editions of 1759 to contain the celebrated eleven-line paragraphe "Candide était affligé..." on p. 242.

In 1760, one year after Voltaire published Candide, a sequel was published with the name Candide, ou l'optimisme, seconde partie.[This work is attributed both to Thorel de Campigneulles, a writer unknown today, and Henri Joseph Du Laurens, who is suspected of having habitually plagiarised Voltaire.
