JORDANES (IORNANDES). De rebus gothorum. Paulus Diaconus Foroiuliensis De gestis langobardorum. Augustae Vindelicorum (Augsburg), Ioannis Miller, 1515.
Folio. 298 x 211 mm. (26, last blank), (44) leaves. Woodcut pictorial title by Hans Burgkmair, last leaf with woodcut printer's device, woodcut initials. Last leaf with mended tear in lower margin, Minor foxing.
Both works edited by Conrad Peutinger (1465-1547), with his privilege issued by Emperor Maximilian I, dated 1511, printed on title verso. The title by Burgkmair executed by Jost Dienecker.
VD 16 J 932. Editio princeps of Jordanes (6th century) chronicle of the Goths, together with a good edition of Paulus Diaconus' (or Warnefrid, d. 797) history of the Langobards, first printed in 1471. BOUND WITH:
POMPONIUS MELA. Pomponii Melae Hispani, Libri de situ orbis tres, adiectis Ioachimi Vadiani Heluetii in eosdem Scholiis: Addita quoq(ue) in Geographia(m) Catechesi: & Epistola Vadiani ad Agricola(m) digna lectu. Cum Indice summatim omnia complectete. Wien, Johannes Singriener für Lukas Atlantse, 1518.
Folio (binding about325x225 mm., text 305x210 mm.). (23), 1-132, (1) ll. Title within wide woodcut pictorial frame, last leaf with woodcut printer's device, woodcut initials. Title and first 3 leaves mended in outer lower corner, some minor foxing and staining. Old annotation on leaf signed a1.
VD 16 M 2310. First published in 1471, this is the first critical edition.
The annotations contain several references to Vespuccius and the discoveries of the Spaniards and Portugese, and the appendix epistle of Vadianus to Agricola, first printed in 1515, contains on folio 128 the passage in which the new world is called America." (Sabin 63956; vol. 15, 269).
Contemporary blindtooled somewhat worn and spotted pigskin binding over wooden bevelled boards, brass clasps and fittings (partly mended), spine in five compartments, mended crack in upper part. Some worming, partly some small letter loss, otherwise mostly marginal. Old signature on inside of upper board Jodoco Kilchmeyer.
