Two important works by Augustine of Hippo, both printed by Johann Amerbach in Basel, in a contemporary binding. Amerbach printed many works by Augustinus, beginning with The City of God, and culminating in a magisterial edition of his complete works in 1506.
Augustinus (354 – 430), Christian theologian and philosopher from Roman Africa. He was the bishop of Hippo Regius from Thagaste in Numidia Cirtensis, (present-day Souk Ahras, Algeria). His writings deeply influenced the development of Western philosophy and Western Christianity, and he is viewed as one of the most important Church Fathers of the Latin Church in the Patristic Period.
Augustine is probably best known for his Confessions, which is a personal account of his earlier life, and for De civitate Dei (The City of God, consisting of 22 books), which he wrote to restore the confidence of his fellow Christians, which was badly shaken by the sack of Rome by the Visigoths in 410. His On the Trinity, in which he developed what has become known as the 'psychological analogy' of the Trinity, is also considered to be among his masterpieces, and arguably of more doctrinal importance than the Confessions or the City of God.
