Beskrivning
CHRISTIAN THE YOUNGER OF BRUNSWICK-WOLFENBÜTTEL (1599–1626). Document signed, dated july 1617, with paper seal, 1 page in folio (c 330x200 mm.) with address leaf. Folded, browned, some spotting, minor repair.
Together with engraved portrait of Christian of Brunswick, Christianus Episcopus Halberstadensis..., c. 195x133 mm., mounted to paper along the sides, some soiling to text.
Christian of Brunswick (born Sept. 20, 1599, Gröningen, Bishopric of Halberstadt [Germany]—died June 16, 1626, Wolfenbüttel, Lower Saxony) was a duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Wolfenbüttel, Protestant military commander, and soldier of fortune during the early part of the Thirty Years’ War (1618–48), who made his reputation predominantly through his wholesale plundering and burning. Also called “The mad Halberstadter” (der tolle Halberstadter), or “the mad Christian,” as his contemporaries called him because of his unruly disposition (Britannica).
Wounded during battle in 1622, his left arm was subsequently amputated.
While Ferdinand of Bavaria consolidated Catholic power in the region, Christian was his primary antagonist in Westphalia.
