The present painting is closely repeating the composition of a painting formerly with Wanennes 6 Mar 2014, Lot 1018, attributed to Domenico di Bartolomeo Ubaldini ”Puligo” (1492-1527), but with lesser attention to details.
The artist can be identified with one of Puligo’s students, most likely Giovambattista (Giovanni Battista) Verrocchi (1494-1569) or Domenico Beceri, both associated with the alias name Maestro di Volterra.
Close parallells to the facial features are provided by the Madonna attributed to Verrocchi, Pandolfini 21 Dec 2022, Lot 3, and the Madonna col Bambino e San Giovannino attributed to the Maestro di Volterra at the Pinacoteca in Siena (563), recently attributed to Verrocchi by Alessandro Nesi.
The painting has previously been attributed to Luca Penni (1500/1504-1556)
