Etching, 1763-1764. Signed "c. hutin in. inc." in the plate.
I. 23.5 x 17.5 cm, S. 24.4 x 18.1 cm.
Baudicour 9. The second, final state, with the number lower right.
From "Recueil de différents sujets composés et gravés par Charles Hutin à Dresden".
A superb impression, with strong contrasts and crisp, partially inky plate edges.
Born in Paris, Hutin studied with the painter François Le Moine (France 1688-1737) and at the age of twenty-one he won the Prix de Rome and subsequently went to Rome for seven years to further his studies in painting and sculpture. After his return to Paris in 1746, he was elected to the Académie Royale. To gain admission to the Académie he executed a sculpture as his presentation piece, and this attracted the attention of the Elector of Saxony, who invited him to Dresden in 1748, and work as a court artist. In 1764, he became director of the Dresden Royal Academy of Arts.
PROVENANCE
Unidentified collector, with a flower ink stamp verso (Lugt 2840); The collection of Engineer and Major Frank Bensow (1883-1969), with the ink stamp verso (Lugt 982c).
