Beskrivning
Etching and engraving, circa 1730. Signed "Iacobus Amiconi Pinxit et Sculp." in the plate.
I. 29.0 x 37.0 cm, S. 36.0 x 50.0 cm. The sheet with a counter mark letter N or Z to an unknown watermark.
Bartsch 3.
A brilliant, early impression, with strong contrasts, crisp, inky plate edges, and no sign of wear.
According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, where there is an oil painting by Amigoni of the same subject and similar composition, "The composition celebrates the end of winter through the union of Flora, Roman goddess of spring, and Zephyr, god of wind. Despite a preponderance of view paintings, Venetian artists specializing in figures—including Amigoni, Sebastiano Ricci, and Giovanni Pellegrini—also achieved international reputation and received commissions throughout Europe. Amigoni painted this work in England, where he lived between 1729 and 1739."
Provenance
The collection of Engineer and Major Frank Bensow (1883-1969).
