This detailed etching by Luyken depicts the October 1685 revoking of the Edict of Nantes by the French King Louis XIV. The annulling of the edict, which had been proclaimed by Louis' predecessor Henry IV on April 13, 1598 to grant the Huguenots (or Protestants) the right to practice their religion without state interference, was an attempt to force the Protestants in France to convert to Catholicism or face further persecution.
