Beskrivning
Etching, circa 1650-1660. Signed in the plate.
I. 12.0 x 20.5 cm, 12.3 x 20.9 cm.
Bartsch 43.
While not a great deal is known of Nooms biographically, he is presumed to have been a sailor (thus his moniker Zeeman, or Seaman in English), and was a widely traveled artist, a Dutch Golden Age painter-printmaker, and publisher, based in Amsterdam. From 1650-1652 Nooms was in Paris and in 1652 returned to Amsterdam. In 1656, he is mentioned as living in Amsterdam, sharing a house with the painter Claes (Nicolaes) Outhuysen. Around 1656, it is probable that he again visited Paris and subsequently traveled around the Mediterranean coast of France. In 1657, it is assumed he was in Germany working for the Elector Friedrich Wilhelm of Brandenburg in Berlin, and between 1661 and 1663 probably accompanied the Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter during his mission to the Barbary Coast of central western North Africa.
PROVENANCE
Dr. C. Axel Widstrand (Sweden 1866-1956), with the ink stamp verso (Lugt 2630a); The collection of Engineer and Major Frank Bensow (1883-1969), with the ink stamp verso (Lugt 982c).
