New Hollstein 599. The fourth state, of six, after the removal of the publisher's name Bonenfant and before the addition of the publisher's name Mariette.
A superb, early proof in this state, with strong contrasts and no sign of wear, from the contemporaneous collection of the publisher of the engraving.
This engraving is based on the oil painting by Van Dyck of the same title, 1629-1630, now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.

Pierre Mariette (France circa 1603-1658), with the inscription and dated 1649 in ink verso (Lugt 1786b); Franz Gawet (Austria 1765-1847), with the inscription and dated 1817 in ink verso (Lugt 1069); Dr. C. Axel Widstrand (Sweden 1866-1956), with the ink stamp verso (Lugt 2630a); The collection of Engineer and Major Frank Bensow (1883-1969), with the ink stamp verso (Lugt 982c).
