Callot's series of etchings "La Combat à la Barrière" illustrates the extraordinary festival arranged in honor of the Duchess of Chevreuse, who was in exile at the Lorraine court after the discovery of her part in a plot against Cardinal Richelieu. The etchings represent the elaborate chariots and floats which carried the aristocrats as they entered the tournament area. The climax of the festival was a joust for the favor of the Duchess of Chevreuse between Duke Charles IV of Lorraine and the Prince of Phalsbourg.
PROVENANCE
