Giorgio Vasari noted in his biography of Rosso Fiorentino that after the Sack of Rome (1527), the artist fled to Perugia where the artist Domenico Alfani (Italy died 1553) took him in and cared for him, and that in return Rosso made for him a drawing of the Adoration of the Magi. The drawing was then used by Alfani as the design for his altarpiece for the church of the Madonna dei Miracoli in Castel Rigone (1528-1533). After his death, the drawing likely passed to Alfani's son, from whom it was obtained by Cherubino Alberti to use as the basis for this engraving. Both the drawing by Rosso and the altarpiece by Alfani are now presumed lost.
