Engraving.
I. 24.0 x 16.5 cm, 25.8 x 18.5 cm.
The engraving shows the Venetian captain (and later Doge of Venice) seated before a window through which can be seen the Battle of Lepanto. The battle took place on October 7, 1571, with a coalition of the Catholic states, led by the navies of the Republic of Venice and the Spanish Empire, defeating the fleet of the Ottoman Empire in the Gulf of Patras. It was the last major engagement of the western world to be fought almost entirely with rowing vessels and was the largest naval battle in history since antiquity.

The collection of Engineer and Major Frank Bensow (1883-1969), with the ink stamp verso (Lugt 982c).
