Beskrivning
Engraving, circa 1571.
I. 24.5 x 17.8 cm, S. 25.2 x 18.2 cm.
Bierens de Haan 194. The second state, of two, with the addition of the text in the lower margin.
A superb, dark and early impression, with crisp plate edges, strong contrasts, and no sign of wear.
The engraving depicts the fateful struggle between the lust-crazed Roman prince Tarquin and Lucretia, the chaste wife of another Roman ruler, and inspired two engravings by Cornelis Cort after Titian’s (Italy circa 1488/90-1576) well-known painting of this subject, now in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, England. Threatening murder and dishonor, Tarquin raped Lucretia, but her subsequent suicide fueled a rebellion against the monarchy. Tarquin's father, the last king of Rome, was overthrown and the Roman Republic was established. This engraving is oriented in the same direction as the painting, though with a more complete composition than the subsequently cropped original work.
PROVENANCE
Nils Rapp (Sweden 1882-1974), with the ink stamp verso (Lugt 2130a); The collection of Engineer and Major Frank Bensow (1883-1969), with the ink stamp verso (Lugt 982c).
