A very good impression with strong contrasts and partially inky plate edges.
Philippe de Soye, who was active as an engraver during the 1560s-70s, came from what is now part of southern Belgium. He was in Rome from 1565 to 1572, where he worked with the printmaker Cornelis Cort. This engraving was based on a design by Michelangelo, now known through a red chalk study in the Portland Collection, Nottinghamshire.

Robert Balmanno (England and the United States 1779-1861) with the inscription and dated 1815 in ink verso (Lugt 213); The collection of Engineer and Major Frank Bensow (1883-1969), with the ink stamp verso (Lugt 982c).
